5 Tips to Avoid Blocked Stormwater Drains

This means all joints are primed and glued, the drain is water tested, backfilling is done carefully and you have plenty of access into the drain. You can insist on a CCTV inspection before handover.
  2. Keep roof gutters clean of leaves and sticks
  3. Keep wood chips and tan bark away from stormwater pits. If possible put a fine mesh under the lid.
  4. Your stormwater pits are not wash down zones. Don’t hose or sweep unwanted refuse towards them.
  5. Don’t plant large trees over your drains.

Hot water repairs

6 Tips if you need Emergency Hot Water Repairs

  1. All hot water systems have their own stop tap immediately next to them. Therefore, you can shut your hot water off and keep your main cold water supply turned on. You should be looking for a blue or green lever, a T-headed handle or a round black knob the size of a 20 cent piece. Turn the levers so they are across the pipe. All other stop taps twist in a clockwise direction until they cannot be twisted further.
  2. If you cannot find your hot water stop tap, turn your main cold water supply off.
  3. All electric hot water systems have their own electrical circuit. The switch will be in the main switch board. Turn it off.
  4. All gas hot water systems have their own gas stop valve immediately next to them. Turn it off. It is likely to be a yellow, black or red lever. Twist it so the lever is across the pipe.
  5. Call Canberra Plumbing Repairs. We are fully licensed plumbers and gas fitters, with restricted electrical licences and we are experienced solar hot water repairers.
  6. Before you call, check whether the system is gas or electric, storage or continuous flow. If electric, check to see if you have an off peak hot water system.

Hot water system replacements

5 Tips if you need Emergency Hot Water System Replacements

  1. Hot water systems are a big investment, so only buy quality hot water systems. Ask the plumber if he or she would have the same make and model at their own home.
  2. Seek advice from an experienced licensed plumber, not a salesperson. Always ask questions.
  3. Find another plumber. If your plumber does not ask you questions about the system you currently have, how many people are using it, or have you considered any other options, this is because they do not have your best interests in mind.
  4. Before the emergency plumber attends, clear a path to and clear away anything that is stored around your hot water system. This will help the plumber gain access and you are more likely to get a better job.
  5. Before accepting quotes for replacement hot water systems, ask if a new stop tap is included? Will a pressure limiting valve be included? Will new insulated pipe be included? Will new brass connections be included? Will a new slab be installed or will the existing slab be re-levelled and will the old system be taken away?

6 Tips to help you Avoid Unnecessary Plumbing Drainage Issues in Canberra

  1. Don’t put off getting sewerage drainage approvals while renovating. Trying to get approvals after the fact can increase approval costs 20 fold.
  2. Insist that your builder or plumber organises a plumbing permit for all renovation work. If they will not give you a permit, it is likely that the work does not comply with the Australian Standards.
  3. Ask your drainer for their drainers licence number before approving any work.
  4. Ask your drainer about warranties before approving any work.
  5. If you have been told that your drain is broken and needs to be excavated, ask for video evidence or some other form of evidence.

  2. Look for online reviews to see what kind of reputation your plumber or drainer has.
  3. A cheap quote to clear blocked drains does not result in a cheap job. Be wary of plumbers that say it only takes half an hour to properly clean a drain. A little extra time spent on cleaning the drain can save you a fortune in unnecessary repair bills.
  4. Be careful of what you put down your drains. Some things like toys, concrete, plaster and sprinklers are very hard to remove with drain cleaning machines.
  5. Keep leafs, sticks, rocks, tan bark, and toys clear from your roof gutters and stormwater pits.
  6. Get all new drainage and renovation work approved at the time it is being done. Leaving approvals to a later date can increase the cost 20 fold.
  7. You can get a drainage plan from Council or the ACT government, so you don’t install hot water systems, garden sheds or air conditioning units over the top of your drains.
