5 Tips to avoid blocked stormwater drains.

  1. When building, insist that you only have sewer grade pipes used in the stormwater installation and that they are installed to the same high standard as your sewer drains. This means all joints are primed and glued, the drain is water tested, backfilling is done carefully and you have plenty of access into the drain. You can insist on a CCTV inspection before handover.
  2. Keep roof gutters clean of leafs and sticks
  3. Keep wood chips and tan bark away from stormwater pits. If possible put a fine mesh under the lid.
  4. Your stormwater pits are not a wash down zones. Don’t hose or sweep unwanted refuse towards them.
  5. Don’t plant large trees over your drains.

Did you know

Stormwater drains are not installed to the same high standards as sewer drains. This is because stormwater installations are in the Building Code and not the Plumbing Code. Therefore labourers not drainers may have installed your stormwater drains. Stormwater drains do not have to be checked for water tightness during the building inspection process. We find that many joints have never been primed or glued. Straight Tee joints and low radius bends can be used in stormwater drainage. This can make drain clearing and inspections extremely hard. Most blocked stormwater drains are caused by broken pipes, unglued joints, sagging or squashed pipes, tree roots, tan bark, silt, tight bends, Tee intersections and leafs. Stormwater connections to the sewer are illegal. Downpipes cannot drain over gully traps. These are the round grates that you will find up against your homes. The average house in Canberra can harvest 150,000 litres of rain water per annum. Most Canberra plumbers are not expert drain cleaners.
